Liquids to solid

    Heavy sugar

In this experiment, we’ll mix two clear liquids and get a solid.

Ingredients and equipment that you will need

    Soda crystals (from any supermarket)
    Epsom salts from the chemist
    Two jars

    Method and further information

Dissolve a dessertspoonful of soda crystals in water in one jar. Dissolve a dessertspoonful of Epsom salts in water in the other.

Mix the two together and you will see a precipitate of solid magnesium carbonate. This does not dissolve in water. You can filter it out through some kitchen paper if you like.

Be careful – you should ask an adult to help you with these experiments. Do your experiments in old yoghurt pots, jam jars or bottle tops. Don’t use cups or glasses in case someone thinks it’s a drink.
